For my final project as a student I decided to make a piece centred around Joseph Carey Merrick, a prominent and misunderstood figure in disability history.
As I looked further into his life and story I realised that official accounts of his life were missing one crucial thing: they weren't by him. The story that has become cemented in the public consciousness is taken almost entirely from the autobiography of one Dr. Frederick Treves. With this zine I wanted to fill in the gaps and, as a disabled person myself, see through the misconceptions and hyperbole to find the real man underneath.
